Iraq and the Price Tag?

Happened to read Dallas Morning News headlines which stated "Is Iraq worth the price tag?" - the 'price tag' being the number of American Deaths and the cost that had been pumped into this war to date.

But the question in itself seemed to reflect a very arrogant mind-set. Basically, if the returns from the Iraq assault had paid more, would the actions have been justified then? At a global level, our attitude seems to reduce everything to utilitarian terms - 'those things' that serve 'us folks'. Those things being other humans, forests, rivers, the land - you name it.

How long must this assault go on, before we stop and say 'Oops'? I feel this collective oops is going to be a very painful one.
